The Story is the Framework for Cinema: Ranjani Raghavan
“Thinking only of ‘identity’ can become a very selfish thought. It is enough to have values; we don’t need the feeling of ‘this is mine.’ Only when we move beyond that and attempt something different is growth possible,” said actress and director Ranjani Raghavan.
Participating in a session titled “Imagination, Narrative, and Camera,” the actress, writer, and director spoke about cinema and writing.
Regarding the preparation behind making a film, she said: “Imagining costs nothing. Narration means turning that into a script, editing it, giving it to others to read, and then refining it further. This entire process involves a small expense. The next stage is the camera, which is very expensive. At this stage, one must think from a business perspective. You have to keep millions of people in mind and work according to their tastes. In the midst of all this, a director’s personal thoughts can feel very small.”
On her transition to film direction, she said: “While working as an actress, I felt saddened that no one asked for my opinion. This led me to focus more on writing. While working as a screenwriter for a few films, the desire to direct was born. In the film industry, actors and actresses actually have the least amount of work on set. While their challenges are different, in terms of time, they have less work. During those gaps, I learned the art of scene composition and bringing a story to the screen, which has now led me to direction.”
Preparation: Discussing the challenges of filmmaking, Ranjani said: “For any film, the story is the framework. You cannot go beyond it. There is only room to improve things within that frame. Since I had my own team and everyone knew their jobs, I never faced a situation where I had to give orders.” Regarding the thoughts she had before making this film, she said: “I only think about whether the story has substance, if it is relevant today, and if it can be told entertainingly. Because I found satisfactory answers to these, I gathered the courage to make the film. A story can only be brought to the screen in a way that feels intimate to others if it has truly haunted the storyteller first.”
Current Challenges: Speaking on the current challenges in the film industry, Ranjani noted: “Money plays a major role now. Also, characters and their behaviors must be told in a way that resonates with today’s generation. For example, previously, women were portrayed like goddesses. But now, there is a mindset that women want as much freedom as men and that it is natural to make mistakes. People prefer to see women as human beings, not as goddesses. Similarly, some men may have traits like shyness and gentleness, which are traditionally associated with women. We are in an era where we can express this openly. Likewise, women can have masculine energy. Only if all this is portrayed appropriately on screen will people relate to it.” She further added that cinema is not the only medium to tell a story: “Today, stories must be told even through Instagram Reels. Equal effort goes behind every reel. The lack of the ‘perfect’ polish found in movies is exactly what makes Reels feel more natural and authentic.”
Imagination is Vital for a Writer: Poornima Suresh Speaking about writing and acting, Poornima Suresh (of Su From So fame), actress and writer, said: “Art is an attraction; it is the essence required for living. Characters and experiences seen in life are what manifest in cinema. If you report what you see exactly as it is, it becomes a report. When you give it an artistic touch, it takes a different form. A writer absolutely needs imagination.”
Poornima’s view is that no matter how much society changes, there is a significant difference between male and female acting and writing. “The path of men is a highway (Rajamarga), while the path of women is a footbridge or a trail (Kaalu-daari). The sensory experience found on a trail is unique.”

ಸಿನಿಮಾಗೆ ಕಥೆಯೇ ಚೌಕಟ್ಟು: ರಂಜನಿ ರಾಘವನ್
‘ನಮ್ಮತನ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಬಹಳ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥದ ಯೋಚನೆ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳು ಮಾತ್ರವಿದ್ದರೆ ಸಾಕು, ಇದು ನಂದು ಎನ್ನುವ ಭಾವನೆ ಬೇಡ. ಅದು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಇನ್ನೇನೋ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಗ ಮಾತ್ರ ಬೆಳೆಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯʼ ಎಂದು ನಟಿ, ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕಿ ರಂಜನಿ ರಾಘವನ್ ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ʼಕಲ್ಪನೆ, ಕಥನ, ಕ್ಯಾಮರಾʼ ಎಂಬ ಗೊಷ್ಠಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ ನಟಿ, ಬರಹಗಾರ್ತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕಿ ರಂಜನಿ ರಾಘವನ್, ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಹಾಗೂ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯ ಕುರಿತು ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರು.
ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡುವ ಹಿಂದಿನ ತಯಾರಿ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಅವರು, ‘ಕಲ್ಪನೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಒಂದು ರೂಪಾಯಿ ಕೂಡ ಖರ್ಚಾಗಲ್ಲ. ಕಥನ ಎಂದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಸ್ಕ್ರಿಪ್ಟ್ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು, ತಿದ್ದುಪಡಿ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು, ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಓದಲು ನೀಡಬೇಕು ಬಳಿಕ ಇನ್ನೂ ಉತ್ತಮಗೊಳಿಸಬೇಕು. ಇಡೀ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಸಣ್ಣ ಖರ್ಚಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದರ ಮುಂದಿನ ಹಂತ ಕ್ಯಾಮರಾ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಬಹಳ ಖರ್ಚಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯವಹಾರದ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯೋಚನೆ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು. ಲಕ್ಷಾಂತರ ಜನರನ್ನು ಯೋಚನೆಯಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು. ಅವರ ಅಭಿರುಚಿಗೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು. ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಆಗುವಾಗ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕನ ಯೋಚನೆ ಬಹಳ ಸಣ್ಣದು ಎನಿಸುತ್ತದೆʼ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಸಿನಿಮಾ ನಿರ್ದೇಶನಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿ, ʼನಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವಾಗ ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಯಾರೂ ಕೇಳಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆ ಬೇಸರ ಮೂಡಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಬಳಿಕ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಗಮನ ನೀಡಲು ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಕೆಲವು ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳಿಗೆ ಸ್ಕ್ರೀನ್ ರೈಟರ್ ಆಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವಾಗ ನಿರ್ದೇಶನ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಆಸೆ ಹುಟ್ಟಿತು. ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನಟ/ನಟಿಯರಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೆಟ್ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಸವಾಲುಗಳು ಬೇರೆ ಆದರೆ, ಸಮಯದ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಕೆಲಸ. ಅಂತಹ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ದೃಶ್ಯಗಳ ಸಂಯೋಜನೆ, ತೆರೆ ಮೇಲೆ ತರುವ ಕಲೆಯನ್ನು ಕಲಿತು ಈಗ ನಿರ್ದೇಶನದವರೆಗೆ ಬಂದಿದೆʼ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಪೂರ್ವತಯಾರಿ:
ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡುವ ಸವಾಲಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ರಂಜನಿ, ʼಯಾವುದೇ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗೆ ಕಥೆಯೇ ಚೌಕಟ್ಟು. ಅದನ್ನು ಮೀರಿ ಏನೂ ಮಾಡಲು ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದರೊಳಗೆ ಏನೇ ಉತ್ತಮಗೊಳಿಸಲು ಅವಕಾಶವಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ನನ್ನದೇ ತಂಡ ಆಗಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಅವರವರ ಕೆಲಸ ಗೊತ್ತಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾನು ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಆದೇಶ ಮಾಡುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭ ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲʼ ಎಂದರು. ಈ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡುವ ಪೂರ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡ ಯೊಚನೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅವರು, ʼಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಚಾರ ಇದೆಯೇ, ಈ ಕಥೆ ಈಗ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತವೇ, ಇದನ್ನು ಮನರಂಜನಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಬಹುದೇ ಎಂದಷ್ಟೇ ಯೋಚನೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಕ ಉತ್ತರ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡುವ ಧೈರ್ಯ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಯಾವುದೇ ವಿಚಾರ ಹೇಳುವವರಿಗೆ ಅದು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಕಾಡಿದ್ದರೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅವರು ಅದನ್ನು ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಆಪ್ತವೆನಿಸುವಂತೆ ತೆರೆ ಮೇಲೆ ತರಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯʼ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಸವಾಲು:
ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ಸವಾಲುಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ರಂಜನಿ, ʼಹಣವೇ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪಾತ್ರ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಈಗ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಅವರ ನಡವಳಿಕೆ ಈಗಿನವರಿಗೆ ಆಪ್ತವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಹೇಳಬೇಕು. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರನ್ನು ದೇವರಂತೆ ತೋರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ, ಈಗ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರಿಗೆ ಪುರುಷರಷ್ಟೇ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ ಬೇಕು, ತಪ್ಪು ಮಾಡುವುದು ಸಹಜ ಎಂಬ ಮನೋಭಾವವಿದೆ. ಮಹಿಳೆಯರನ್ನು ಮಹಿಳೆಯಾಗಿ ನೋಡಲು ಇಷ್ಟಪಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಹೊರತು ದೇವರಂತೆ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವು ಪುರುಷರಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಹೆಣ್ಣಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಎಂಬಂತಿರುವ ನಾಚಿಕೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಮೃದುವಾದ ಗುಣಗಳಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಮುಕ್ತವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುವ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಮ್ಯಾಸ್ಕುಲೈನ್ ಎನರ್ಜಿ ಕೂಡ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರಲ್ಲಿರಬಹುದು. ಇವೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಸಮರ್ಪಕವಾಗಿ ತೆರೆ ಮೇಲೆ ತಂದರೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಆಪ್ತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆʼ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮದ ಮೂಲಕವೇ ಕಥೆ ಹೇಳಬೇಕು ಎಂದೇನಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದ ರಂಜನಿ, ʼಈಗ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಇನ್ಸ್ಟಾಗ್ರಾಂ ರೀಲ್ಸ್ ಮೂಲಕ ಕೂಡ ಹೇಳಬೇಕು. ಪ್ರತಿ ರೀಲ್ ಹಿಂದೆ ಕೂಡ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಶ್ರಮ ಆಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಸಿನಿಮಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ಅಚ್ಚುಕಟ್ಟುತನ ರೀಲ್ಸ್ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದೇ ಅದು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸಹಜ ಹಾಗೂ ನೈಜವಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿಬರುತ್ತದೆʼ ಎಂದರು.
ಬರಹಗಾರನಿಗೆ ಕಲ್ಪನೆ ಮುಖ್ಯ: ಪೂರ್ಣಿಮಾ ಸುರೇಶ್
ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ನಟನೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಸು ಫ್ರಂ ಸೋ ಖ್ಯಾತಿಯ ನಟಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಬರಹಗಾರ್ತಿ ಪೂರ್ಣಿಮಾ ಸುರೇಶ್, ‘ಕಲೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಒಂದು ಸೆಳೆತ. ಬದುಕಲು ಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವ ದ್ರವ್ಯ ಕಲೆ. ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು, ಅನುಭವಗಳೆ ಸಿನಿಮಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವುದು. ಕಂಡಿದ್ದು, ಕಂಡ ಹಾಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದರೆ ವರದಿ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಲಾತ್ಮಕ ಸ್ಪರ್ಶ ಕೊಟ್ಟಾಗ ಬೇರೆ ರೂಪ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳತ್ತದೆ. ಬರಹಗಾರನಿಗೆ ಕಲ್ಪನೆ ಬೇಕೇ ಬೇಕುʼ ಎಂದರು.
ಸಮಾಜ ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಬದಲಾವಣೆ ಆದರೂ ಗಂಡಿನ ಅಭಿನಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಹೆಣ್ಣಿನ ಅಭಿನಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಬಹಳ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ ಇದೆ. ಪುರುಷರದ್ದು ರಾಜ ಮಾರ್ಗ ಆದರೆ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರದ್ದು ಕಾಲು ದಾರಿ. ಕಾಲು ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗುವ ಅನುಭವವಗಳ ಅನುಭೂತಿ ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಪೂರ್ಣಿಮಾ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ.
