It is not right to say that Daivaradhane and tradition should not be shown on screen: Basuma Kodagu, theatre artist of Kantara 1 fame
Discussion on the usage of tradition on screen during the “Heritage on Screen” session
“I have played the role of a Bhuta Kola performer in many plays and have performed similar roles in movies as well. No objections were raised back then. But, we are facing objections of late, pointed out Basuma Kodagu f Kantara 1 fame.
”It is not right to say that tradition or Daivaradhane (spirit worship) should never be shown on screen. But thorough study is essential before bringing it to the screen,” he said.
Without naming any movie or revealing hos personal opinion on whether the depiction of Daivaradhane in Kantara 1 was right or wrong, he noted during the session titled “Heritage on Screen” (Parade Mele Parampare), “Earlier, people used to study a subject before criticising it. Nowadays, we don’t see that study; only the criticism is prominent.
Mistakes are being searched for out of sheer stubbornness. The culture of banning has increased, and resorting to bans is an extreme step”.
“Wherever performances are presented before the public, it is natural for heritage to manifest. A critical perspective is essential when incorporating customs and traditions into films. People must show the wisdom to choose what is good,” he said.
Expressing opposition to the use of Yakshagana in advertisements, he stated, “It is wrong to use Yakshagana in advertisements and videos for commercial reasons. Furthermore, Yakshagana should be practiced within its traditional framework; disrupting the discipline of Yakshagana for commercial purposes is not right.”
Sharing his views on the current family system, he remarked, “We prevent children from watching Western movies, but they watch everything on their mobiles inside their rooms. We lack clarity on what exactly needs to be banned. Moreover, the concept of a ‘family movie’ no longer fits perfectly because everyone’s tastes have become different.”
Regarding the teaser of the movie Toxic, he said, “One should not reject an entire film just by looking at a certain part of it.”

‘ನಾನು ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ನಾಟಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಭೂತ ಕಟ್ಟುವ ಪಾತ್ರ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಪಾತ್ರ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಆಗ ಯಾವ ತಕರಾರೂ ಬಂದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ . ಆದರೆ ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಆಕ್ಷೇಪ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಪರಂಪರೆಯನ್ನು, ದೈವಾರಾಧನೆಯನ್ನು ಪರದೆ ಮೇಲೆ ತೋರಿಸಲೇಬಾರದು ಅನ್ನುವುದು ಸರಿಯಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಪರದೆಗೆ ತರುವ ಮೊದಲು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಅಗತ್ಯ’ ಎಂದು ರಂಗಕರ್ಮಿ, ಕಾಂತಾರ 1 ಖ್ಯಾತಿಯ ನಟ ಬಾಸುಮ ಕೊಡಗು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಈ ಮೂಲಕ ಕಾಂತಾರ 1 ಸಿನಿಮಾದಲ್ಲಿ ದೈವಾರಾಧನೆ ತೋರಿಸಿದ್ದು ಸರಿಯೋ ತಪ್ಪೋ ಎಂಬುದರ ಕುರಿತು ಪರೋಕ್ಷವಾಗಿ ಹೆಸರೆತ್ತದೆ ಅವರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ‘ಪರದೆ ಮೇಲೆ ಪರಂಪರೆ’ ಗೋಷ್ಠಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಅವರು, ‘ಮೊದಲು ವಿಮರ್ಶೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಮೊದಲು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಈಗ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ, ವಿಮರ್ಶೆ ಎದ್ದು ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಹಠದಿಂದ ತಪ್ಪು ಹುಡುಕಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಬ್ಯಾನ್ ಮಾಡುವ ಪದ್ಧತಿ ಜಾಸ್ತಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ನಿಷೇಧ ಒಡ್ಡುವ ಕ್ರಮ ಬಹಳ ಎಕ್ಸ್ ಟ್ರೀಮ್ ಆದ ಕ್ರಮ’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
‘ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನಗಳು ಜನರ ಮುಂದೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತವೆಯೋ ಅಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲಾ ಪರಂಪರೆ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಸಹಜ. ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆಚಾರ-ಪರಂಪರೆಯನ್ನು ಅಳವಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಾಗ ವಿಮರ್ಶಾತ್ಮಕ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನ ಅಗತ್ಯ. ಜನರು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದನ್ನು ಆರಿಸುವ ಜಾಣ್ಮೆ ತೋರಬೇಕು’ ಎಂದರು.
ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನವನ್ನು ಜಾಹೀರಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸವುದಕ್ಕೆ ವಿರೋಧ ವ್ಯಕ್ತ ಪಡಿಸಿದ ಅವರು, ‘ಕಮರ್ಷಿಯಲ್ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನವನ್ನು ಜಾಹೀರಾತುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ವೀಡಿಯೋಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸುವುದು ತಪ್ಪು. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ನೆಲೆಗಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಪ್ರಯೋಗ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೇ ಹೊರತು ಕಮರ್ಷಿಯಲ್ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಕ್ರಮಭಂಗ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಸರಿಯಲ್ಲ’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಈಗಿನ ಕೌಟುಂಬಿಕ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಕುರಿತೂ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತ ಪಡಿಸಿದ ಅವರು, ‘ಪಾಶ್ಚಿಮಾತ್ಯ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳನ್ನು ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ನೋಡದಂತೆ ತಡೆಯುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅವರು ಕೋಣೆಯೊಳಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಮೊಬೈಲ್ ನಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ನೋಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಮಗೆ ಯಾವುದು ಬ್ಯಾನ್ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟತೆಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಈಗ ಕೌಟುಂಬಿಕ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಅನ್ನುವ ಪರಿಕಲ್ಪನೆಯೇ ಸರಿ ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಯಾಕೆಂದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಅಭಿರುಚಿ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿದೆ’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಟಾಕ್ಸಿಕ್ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಟೀಸರ್ ಕುರಿತು ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಅವರು, ‘ಸಿನಿಮಾದ ಯಾವುದೋ ಒಂದು ಭಾಗ ನೋಡಿ ಇಡೀ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಬಾರದು’ ಎಂದರು.
