Cricket failed to grow competitively in the coast due to a few wrong decisions: Jayant Kodkani
“At one time, cricket was flourishing in the Mangaluru region. However, over time, due to wrong decisions taken during several unfortunate circumstances, competitive cricket platforms failed to take shape,” said senior journalist Jayant Kodkani.
Speaking at the session titled “Red Cherries in the Canara Coast: Cricket in Mangaluru and Udupi,” based on his book Red Cherries in the Canara Coast, he noted: “Today, to the outside world, K.L. Rahul is the only visible cricketer from Mangaluru. But once, there were many players here. In Indian cricket history, the first-ever Ranji match was played between Mysore and Madras. There were four Mangalurean players in the Mysore team and one in the Madras team.”
“Regions like South Africa and London have documented histories of regional cricket. Similarly, our coast has a cricket history too. This book was written to document that. However, due to a lack of existing records, the writing process was somewhat difficult,” he explained.
“Matches here stopped due to politics. Outside of Bengaluru, no place has as many medical colleges as this region. Despite being such a hub, for various reasons, it wasn’t possible to play cricket at a high competitive level here. The fact that it rains continuously for three months is also a factor. Yet, because of that very rain, the ‘Barish Trophy’ used to be held at Nehru Maidan. People would play cricket wearing raincoats and holding umbrellas,” he said.
“Cricket is deeply interwoven with literature and society. Many English literateurs have written about cricket. In Kannada, even Kuvempu was a cricket fan; he had shared that he was a fan of Sunil Gavaskar,” he added.
Speaking about the famous cricketer Budhi Kunderan, he said: “Budhi Kunderan hailed from Mulki near Mangaluru. A legendary cricketer, he worked extremely hard in his early days. Though he came from a background of poverty, he was an exceptional player.”
The dialogue was moderated by senior journalist Manjula Veerappa. Senior cricket enthusiasts from Mangaluru participated in the session, giving a fresh touch to old memories.

‘ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಸಮೃದ್ಧವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಕಾಲಾಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವು ತಪ್ಪು ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ತಪ್ಪು ನಿರ್ಧಾರಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಾತ್ಮಕ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ವೇದಿಕೆಗಳು ರೂಪುಗೊಳ್ಳಲಿಲ್ಲ’ ಎಂದು ಹಿರಿಯ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತ ಜಯಂತ್ ಕೋಡ್ಕಣಿ ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಅವರು ಬರೆದಿರುವ ‘ರೆಡ್ ಚೆರ್ರೀಸ್ ಇನ್ ದಿ ಕೆನರಾ ಕೋಸ್ಟ್’ ಎಂಬ ಕೃತಿಯ ಆಧಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ‘ರೆಡ್ ಚೆರ್ರೀಸ್ ಇನ್ ದಿ ಕೆನರಾ ಕೋಸ್ಟ್: ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಮತ್ತು ಉಡುಪಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್’ ಎಂಬ ಗೋಷ್ಠಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಅವರು, ‘ಈಗ ಹೊರ ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೆ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟಿಗ ಎಂದರೆ ಕೆ.ಎಲ್. ರಾಹುಲ್ ಮಾತ್ರ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಒಂದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಆಟಗಾರರಿದ್ದರು. ಭಾರತದ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಇತಿಹಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ರಣಜಿ ಪಂದ್ಯ ಮೈಸೂರು ಮತ್ತು ಮದ್ರಾಸ್ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ನಡೆದಿತ್ತು. ಮೈಸೂರು ತಂಡದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಮಂದಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮದ್ರಾಸ್ ತಂಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಆಟಗಾರ ಇದ್ದರು’ ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
‘ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾ ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾ, ಲಂಡನ್ ಗೆ ಪ್ರಾದೇಶಿಕ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಇತಿಹಾಸವಿದೆ. ಅದೇ ಥರ ನಮ್ಮ ಕರಾವಳಿಗೂ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಇತಿಹಾಸವಿದೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ದಾಖಲಿಸುವ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಕೃತಿ ರಚನೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ದಾಖಲಾತಿಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲದೇ ಇರುವ ಕಾರಣ ಇದರ ರಚನೆ ಕೊಂಚ ಕಷ್ಟಕರವಾಗಿತ್ತು’ ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
‘ಪಾಲಿಟಿಕ್ಸ್ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪಂದ್ಯಗಳು ನಿಂತು ಹೋದವು. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಹೊರತಾಗಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವಷ್ಟು ಮೆಡಿಕಲ್ ಕಾಲೇಜ್ ಬೇರೆಲ್ಲೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಇಂಥಾ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವು ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಂದ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಾತ್ಮಕ ಮಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಆಡಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಮೂರು ತಿಂಗಳು ನಿರಂತರ ಮಳೆ ಬೀಳುವ ಪ್ರದೇಶವಾಗಿರುವುದೂ ಇದಕ್ಕೊಂದು ಕಾರಣ. ಆದರೆ ಅದೇ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಹರೂ ಮೈದಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾರಿಶ್ ಟ್ರೋಫಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ರೇನ್ ಕೋಟ್ ಧರಿಸಿ, ಕೊಡೆ ಹಿಡಿದು ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಆಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
‘ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮಾಜದ ಜೊತೆ ಹಾಸು ಹೊಕ್ಕಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷಿನ ಹಲವಾರು ಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳು ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಕುರಿತು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಕುವೆಂಪು ಕೂಡ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಕುವೆಂಪು ಅವರು ಸುನೀಲ್ ಗವಾಸ್ಕರ್ ಅವರು ಅಭಿಯಾನಿಯಾಗಿರುವುದಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಖ್ಯಾತ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟಿಗ ಬುಧಿ ಕುಂದ್ರನ್ ಕುರಿತು ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಅವರು, ‘ಬುಧಿ ಕುಂದ್ರನ್ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಮುಲ್ಕಿ ಮೂಲದವರು. ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟಿಗರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಆರಂಭದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳ ಪರಿಶ್ರಮ ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು. ಬಡತನದ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಿಂದ ಬಂದವರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಆದರೆ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಆಟಗಾರರಾಗಿದ್ದರು’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಈ ಸಂವಾದವನ್ನು ಹಿರಿಯ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತೆ ಮಂಜುಳಾ ವೀರಪ್ಪ ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಹಿರಿಯ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳು ಈ ಗೋಷ್ಠಿಯನ್ನು ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿ ಹಳೆಯ ನೆನಪುಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೊಸ ಸ್ಪರ್ಶ ನೀಡಿದರು.
