Bhyrappa’s works reached many languages due to their literary power and substance: Dr. Vijaya Haran
“The translation of Bhyrappa’s works began in 1970. His works have been translated not only into Indian languages but also into Russian, Chinese, and German. The number of translations has exceeded a hundred, with more than 65 translators involved. The reason for this is their literary power and substance. No other Indian author has seen this scale of translation,” said Dr. M.S. Vijaya Haran.
Speaking at the session titled ‘Bhyrappa in Translations,’ she said, “Regarding Dravidian languages, Vamshavruksha was translated into Telugu for the first time. It is noteworthy that eight of his novels were translated into Sanskrit. His works have reached not only domestic languages but foreign ones as well.”
She further added, “If we look at the appendices of many of Bhyrappa’s works, we find information about his translated books. However, the identity of the translators often remains unknown. I moved forward with the intention of identifying them, but it was not easy. This is because Bhyrappa is a person who creates literature in a state of solitude, almost like a penance. Records were not a priority for him, so he didn’t have many documents. He provided information from his memory, and I went searching to collect that data.”
Participating in the session, Sanskrit scholar Dr. H.R. Vishwas, who translated S.L. Bhyrappa’s works into Sanskrit, shared his experience: “Translating his works was not easy. His language is dense/complex. Many times, he does not complete a sentence. When I asked him about this, Bhyrappa said that the language of literature is different from the language of the mind. The characters in my novels speak the language of the mind.”
Both resource persons spoke informatively about the works and their translations. A detailed discussion regarding the opinions and perspectives of the translators also took place.

‘ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಕೃತಿಗಳ ಅನುವಾದ ಆರಂಭವಾಗಿದ್ದು 197ರಲ್ಲಿ. ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ರಷ್ಯನ್, ಚೀನಿ, ಜರ್ಮನ್ ಭಾಷೆಗೂ ಅನುವಾದವಾಗಿದೆ. ಅನುವಾದಗಳೇ ನೂರು ದಾಟಿವೆ. ಅನುವಾದಕರ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ 65ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಸತ್ವ. ಈ ರೀತಿಯ ಅನುವಾದ ಬೇರೆ ಯಾವ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಲೇಖಕರಿಗೂ ಆಗಿಲ್ಲ’ ಎಂದು ಡಾ.ಎಂ.ಎಸ್. ವಿಜಯಾ ಹರನ್ ಹೇಳಿದರು.
‘ಅನುವಾದಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಭೈರಪ್ಪ’ ಗೋಷ್ಠಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಅವರು, ‘ದ್ರಾವಿಡ ಭಾಷೆಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಪಟ್ಟಂತೆ ಮೊಟ್ಟಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ತೆಲುಗು ಭಾಷೆಗೆ ವಂಶವೃಕ್ಷ ಅನುವಾದಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ವಿಶೇಷ ಎಂದರೆ ಅವರ ಎಂಟು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಕ್ಕೆ ಅನುವಾದವಾಯಿತು. ದೇಶೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ ವಿದೇಶೀ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಿಗೂ ಅನುವಾದವಾಗಿವೆ’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
‘ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಕೃತಿಗಳ ಅನುಬಂಧ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಅವರ ಅನುವಾದಗೊಂಡ ಕೃತಿಗಳ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಯಾರು ಅನುವಾದ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯೋಣ ಅಂತ ಮುಂದುವರಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಯಾಕೆಂದರೆ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ತಪಸ್ಸಿನ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಏಕಾಂತ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಕೃತಿ ರಚನೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಂತಹ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ. ಅವರಿಗೆ ದಾಖಲೆಗಳು ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ದಾಖಲೆ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವರು ನೆನಪಿನ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದಲೇ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ನಾನು ಅದನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಿ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಸಂಗ್ರಹ ಮಾಡಿದೆ’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
‘ಭೈರ’
ಎಸ್.ಎಲ್. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಕ್ಕೆ ಅನುವಾದ ಮಾಡಿದ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ಗೋಷ್ಠಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರಾದ ಡಾ. ಎಚ್.ಆರ್. ವಿಶ್ವಾಸ್ ಅವರು, ‘ಅವರ ಕೃತಿ ಅನುವಾದ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವರ ಭಾಷೆ ಜಿಗುಟು. ಅವರು ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಮಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಬಹಳ ಸಲ. ಅದನ್ನು ಅವರ ಬಳಿ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ, ಅವರು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಭಾಷೆ ಬೇರೆ, ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಭಾಷೆ ಬೇರೆ. ನನ್ನ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಭಾಷೆ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂದು ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದರು’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಇಬ್ಬರು ಸಂಪನ್ಮೂಲ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳೂ ಕೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅನುವಾದಗಳ ಕುರಿತು ಮಾಹಿತಿಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರು. ಅನುವಾದಕರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಗಳ ಕುರಿತೂ ಕೂಲಂಕಷ ಚರ್ಚೆ ನಡೆಯಿತು.
