Bhyrappa felt the Kannada world was intellectually impure: G.B. Harish Observations during a dialogue on social insights in Bhyrappa’s novels
“Bhyrappa perceived society through the lens of Ananda Coomaraswamy and Kane. Although he was deeply interested in music, the path he chose to express social consciousness was the path of literature. He realized that to reach Shanta Rasa (the essence of peace), one must transcend all other emotional essences. Amidst all this, he felt that the Kannada world had become intellectually impure,” opined thinker G.B. Harish.
G.B. Harish and Diwakar Hegde Kerehonda spoke at the session titled “Social Insights in Bhyrappa’s Novels” Discussing Bhyrappa’s works, G.B. Harish noted, “In Bhyrappa’s novels, one can see every character attempting to transcend their own limitations. These characters express values, rationality, and social insights. It was his opinion that to ruin a society, one must first ruin its music. We see such attempts being made in India today by people like T.M. Krishna, which is a matter of sadness.”
Stating that artists also bear social responsibility, G.B. Harish said, “We often hear the argument that art and the artist are separate, and that one should not judge an artist’s life outside of their work. However, an artist must be aware that the public observes them. Some speak eloquently in gatherings, but their personal lives are in disarray. They become role models to many without even realizing it. An artist’s life influences society; people observe their lives even behind the scenes. Bhyrappa had total clarity on this. After TaRaSu and Devudu, Bhyrappa is the author who upholds such values. Had he not been there, a great vacuum would have set in. Bhyrappa’s social consciousness is like the scaling of a peak.”
The other guest, Diwakar Hegde, remarked, “When we observe Bhyrappa’s novels and the ideas shared by his characters, we understand his grasp of rationality and Dharma. In one instance, he writes that there is a moral and spiritual authority over all of India. Elsewhere, he notes that rationality does not provide answers to all of life’s problems; he writes that if the fear of divine punishment for wrongdoing did not exist, there would be more madmen in the world than there are now. Furthermore, Bhyrappa mentioned long ago how the modern and the traditional must walk hand-in-hand.”

ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಒಳನೋಟಗಳ ಕುರಿತ ಸಂವಾದದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಭಿಮತ
ʼಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಸಮಾಜವನ್ನು ಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದ್ದು ಆನಂದ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಕಾಣೆ ಅವರ ಮೂಲಕ. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಸಂಗೀತದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಇದ್ದವರಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಅವರು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳಲು ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡ ದಾರಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ದಾರಿ. ಶಾಂತ ರಸಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವಾಗ ಎಲ್ಲ ರಸಗಳನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ ಬರಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅರಿವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇವೆಲ್ಲದರ ನಡುವೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಗತ್ತು ವೈಚಾರಿಕವಾಗಿ ಅಶುದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದೆನಿಸತ್ತುʼ ಎಂದು ಚಿಂತಕ ಜಿ.ಬಿ. ಹರೀಶ್ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದರು.
ʼಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಅವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಒಳನೋಟಗಳುʼ ಗೋಷ್ಠಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜಿಬಿ ಹರೀಶ್ ಹಾಗೂ ದಿವಾಕರ್ ಹೆಗಡೆ ಕೆರೆಹೊಂಡ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರು. ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಅವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಜಿ.ಬಿ.ಹರೀಶ್, ʼಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಅವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳೂ ತನ್ನ ಮಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಮೀರುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡುವುದನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಅವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳು, ವೈಚಾರಿಕತೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಮಾಜದ ಒಳನೋಟಗಳನ್ನು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸುವುದನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಒಂದು ಸಮಾಜವನ್ನು ಹಾಳು ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದರೆ ಅದರ ಸಂಗೀತವನ್ನು ಹಾಳು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಅವರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಈ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಈಗ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಟಿ.ಎಂ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಅಂತಹವರು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಅದು ಬೇಸರದ ವಿಷಯʼ ಎಂದರು.
ಕಲಾವಿದರಿಗೂ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದ ಜಿ.ಬಿ. ಹರೀಶ್, ʼಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಕಲೆಯೇ ಬೇರೆ ಕಲಾವಿದರೇ ಬೇರೆ, ಅವರನ್ನು ಕಲೆಯಿಂದ ಆಚೆಯ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಬಾರದು ಎನ್ನುವ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಆದರೆ, ಕಲಾವಿದನನ್ನು ಜನರು ಗಮನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಅರಿವಿನಲ್ಲಿರಬೇಕು. ಸಭೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚೆನ್ನಗಿ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ, ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಜೀವನ ಹದಗೆಟ್ಟಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವರು ಅನೇಕರಿಗೆ ತಿಳಿಯದೆಯೇ ಮಾದರಿಯಾಗುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕಲಾವಿದರ ಜೀವನ ಸಮಾಜವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ತೆರೆಯ ಆಚೆಗೆ ಕೂಡ ಅವರ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟತೆ ಇತ್ತು. ತರಾಸು, ದೇವುಡು ಬಳಿಕ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿ ಹಡಿಯುವಂತಹ ಲೇಖಕ ಭೈರಪ್ಪ. ಅವರು ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಶೂನ್ಯ ಆವರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತಿತ್ತು. ಶಿಖರದ ಆರೋಹಣ ಇದ್ದ ಹಾಗೆ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆʼ ಎಂದರು.
ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ಅತಿಥಿ ದಿವಾಕರ ಹೆಗಡೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿ, ʼ ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಅವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿದಾಗ, ಅವರ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಹೇಳುವ ವಿಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಾಗ ವೈಚಾರಿಕತೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಧರ್ಮದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅವರಿಗಿದ್ದ ಅರಿವು ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಡೀ ಭಾರತದ ಮೇಲೆ ನೈತಿಕವಾದ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕವಾದ ಅಧಿಕಾರವಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಒಂದು ಕಡೆ ಅವರು ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಕಡೆ ಜೀವನದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳಿಗೆ ವೈಚಾರಿಕತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತರ ಸಿಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ತಪ್ಪು ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ದೇವರು ಶಿಕ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂಬ ಭಯ ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಲ್ಲಿ ಈಗಿರುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹುಚ್ಚರು ಇರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಎಂದು ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಆಧುನಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ವಿಷಯಗಳು ಹೇಗೆ ಜೊತೆಯಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಬಹಳ ಹಿಂದೆಯೇ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆʼ ಎಂದರು.
