Pollution is increasing in the ocean, and microplastics are causing significant problems: Dr. Raghu Murtugudde
“Ships dump a vast amount of waste into the sea, leading to rising ocean pollution. This is primarily causing large-scale problems for marine animals. Specifically, microplastics are creating numerous issues, and through fish, these problems are affecting humans as well. While many efforts are underway to remove plastic, there must be a ban on microplastics,” said environmental expert and thinker Dr. Raghu Murtugudde.
He was speaking while participating in a session titled “From Netravati to Nile.” Speaking during the same session, Commodore Uday Rao noted, “Even though there is a distance of thousands of kilometers between the Netravati and Nile rivers, trade existed between India and Egypt many centuries ago. Muslin cloth used to be exported from India to Egypt.”
The dialogue was moderated by Prashanth Vaidyaraj and CA Giridhar Kamath also participated.

‘ಹಡಗುಗಳು ಸಮುದ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಕಸ ಹಾಕುತ್ತವೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಸಮುದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾಗಿ ಸಮುದ್ರದ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳಿಗೆ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಎದುರಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ಮೈಕ್ರೋ ಪ್ಲಾಸ್ಟಿಕ್ನಿಂದ ಹಲವು ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳು ಎದುರಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಮೀನುಗಳಿಂದ ಮನುಷ್ಯರಿಗೂ ತೊಂದರೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಪ್ಲಾಸ್ಟಿಕ್ ತೆಗೆಯೋಕೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಮೈಕ್ರೋ ಪ್ಲಾಸ್ಟಿಕ್ಗೆ ನಿಷೇಧ ಹೇರಬೇಕು’ ಎಂದು ಪರಿಸರ ತಜ್ಞ, ಚಿಂತಕ ಡಾ. ರಘು ಮುರ್ತುಗುಡ್ಡೆ ಅವರು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
‘ನೇತ್ರಾವತಿಯಿಂದ ನೈಲ್ ವರೆಗೆ’ ಎಂಬ ಸಂವಾದ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿ ಅವರು ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರು. ಇದೇ ಗೋಷ್ಠಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಕಮಡೋರ್ ಉದಯ್ ರಾವ್ ಅವರು, ‘ನೇತ್ರಾವತಿ ಮತ್ತು ನೈಲ್ ನದಿಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಕಿಲೋಮೀಟರ್ಗಳ ಅಂತರವಿದ್ದರೂ ಹಲವು ಶತಮಾನಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಭಾರತ ಮತ್ತು ಈಜಿಪ್ಟ್ ದೇಶಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಭಾರತದಿಂದ ಈಜಿಪ್ಟ್ ಗೆ ಮಸ್ಲಿನ್ ಬಟ್ಟೆ ರಫ್ತು ಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
