“Some people targeted S.L. Bhyrappa and caused him a great deal of trouble. However, Bhyrappa continued his work undisturbed,” said Sandeep Balakrishna.
Participating in a dialogue titled “Historical Consciousness in Bhyrappa’s Literature,” he said, “In the last 70–80 years, those who screamed the loudest about peace and harmony being destroyed in the country are the ones who have caused the most destruction. Bhyrappa never pointed fingers at anyone in his novels. However, Communists and Marxists, feeling the sting of his critiques, constantly attacked him. They vented their anger against him because he exposed them. But Bhyrappa ignored all of this and moved forward with his work.”
“There is no Parva without the Mahabharata. S.L. Bhyrappa is the one who took the miracles of the Mahabharata and depicted them realistically through his novel. He grasped the inner essence of Vyasa’s Mahabharata and rewrote it in a different light. It is his masterpiece. He has constructed that novel very realistically and extensively. For that, he traveled across the country and conducted immense research. That is why the novel turned out so wonderfully,” he added.
Sandeep Balakrishna noted that the controversies that erupted when Aavarana was released did not occur when Saartha was published. He explained that in Saartha, Bhyrappa wrote about the beginning of the invasions, whereas in Aavarana, he captured the darkness of the reign. “Some kings were even more cruel than Aurangzeb. However, Aurangzeb was not only the last major Mughal king but also a tragic and extremely cruel ruler. Bhyrappa made an effort to show that cruelty.”
“Bhyrappa left everything to the reader’s perception,” he said, adding that Bhyrappa never said anything directly. “He conveyed things through his characters and left it to the readers to understand what they would.”

ಕೆಲವರು ಎಸ್.ಎಲ್. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರನ್ನು ಗುರಿ ಮಾಡಿ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ತೊಂದರೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಆದರೆ, ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಪಾಡಿಗೆ ತಾವು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದರು ಎಂದು ಸಂದೀಪ್ ಬಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣ ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆ ಎಂಬ ಸಂವಾದದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಅವರು, ‘ಕಳೆದ 70-80 ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಂತಿ, ಸೌಹಾರ್ದತೆ ಹಾಳಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಬೊಬ್ಬೆ ಹಾಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದವರೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ನಾಶ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ತಮ್ಮ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವತ್ತೂ, ಯಾರನ್ನೂ ಬೆಟ್ಟು ಮಾಡಿ ತೋರಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ, ಕಮ್ಯುನಿಸ್ಟರು ಮತ್ತು ಮಾರ್ಕಿಸ್ಟಿಸ್ಟರು ತಮ್ಮ ಹೆಗಲು ಮುಟ್ಟಿ ನೋಡಿಕೊಂಡು, ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಹರಿಹಾಯುತ್ತಲೇ ಬಂದರು. ಅವರನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಬಯಲು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಸಿಟ್ಟು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಆದರೆ, ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಇದ್ಯಾವುದನ್ನೂ ಲೆಕ್ಕಿಸದೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದರು’ ಎಂದರು.
‘ಮಹಾಭಾರತವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಪರ್ವ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಮಹಾಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಪವಾಡಗಳನ್ನು, ತಮ್ಮ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಮೂಲಕ ನೈಜವಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿದವರು ಎಸ್.ಎಲ್. ಭೈರಪ್ಪ. ವ್ಯಾಸರು ಬರೆದ ಮಹಾಭಾರತದ ಅಂತರಾಳವನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು, ಬೇರೆ ತರಹ ಬರೆದರು. ಅದು ಅವರ ಉತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟ ಕೃತಿ. ಬಹಳ ನೈಜವಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸವಿಸ್ತಾರವಾಗಿ ಆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಅವರ ದೇಶ ಪರ್ಯಟನೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ, ಆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಅಷ್ಟು ಅದ್ಭುತವಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದಿದೆ’ ಎಂದರು.
‘ಆವರಣ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಆದಾಗ ಭುಗಿಲೆದ್ದ ವಿವಾದಗಳು, ಸಾರ್ಥ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಆದಾಗ ಆಗಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದ ಸಂದೀಪ್ ಬಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣ, ಸಾರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಕ್ರಮಣದ ಆರಂಭದ ಕುರಿತಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದರು. ಆದರೆ, ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯ ಕರಾಳತೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿಟ್ಟರು. ಔರಂಗಜೇಬನಿಗಿಂತ ಕೆಲವು ರಾಜರು ಕ್ರೂರಿಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಆದರೆ, ಔರಂಗಜೇಬ ಮೊಘಲರ ಕೊನೆಯ ರಾಜನಾಗುವುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ದುರಂತ ಮತ್ತು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಕ್ರೂರಿ ರಾಜನಾಗಿದ್ದ. ಆ ಕ್ರೂರತೆಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡಿದರು’ ಎಂದರು.
‘ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಓದುಗರ ಗ್ರಹಿಕೆಗೆ ಬಿಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಎಂದ ಅವರು, ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಯಾವುದನ್ನೂ ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಪಾತ್ರಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಒಂದಿಷ್ಟು ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಏನು ಅರ್ಥ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೀರೋ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಿ ಎಂದು ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ಬಿಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು’ ಎಂದರು.
ರೋಹಿತ್ ಚಕ್ರತೀರ್ಥ ಸಂವಾದ ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟರು.
